The default Magento checkout is built from Knockout.js UI components and heavy JavaScript. It works, but it is slow on mobile and expensive to customise. Hyvä Checkout moves the logic to the server: components are PHP classes and templates, and Magewire syncs state with the browser. Developers write familiar PHP instead of Knockout bindings.
Hyvä Checkout is a commercial product with its own licence, sold separately or as part of Hyvä Commerce. It can be enabled per store view, so you can roll it out gradually, and it can also run on stores that still use the Luma theme.

Hyvä Checkout layouts are declared in hyva-checkout.xml, where each checkout is defined as a set of steps, and each step references normal Magento layout handles. That means the familiar layout XML tools — adding, moving and removing blocks — apply to the checkout too. A one-step and a multi-step checkout can exist side by side and be assigned per store view.
Interactive parts are Magewire components: PHP classes with public properties and methods, bound to a PHTML template. When a customer changes a field, Magewire sends a small request, the PHP component validates and updates state, and the changed HTML is returned. Validation rules live in PHP next to the business logic, which makes them easy to unit-test.
Payment methods integrate through method renderers and, where a provider needs JavaScript for hosted fields or wallets, through small Alpine.js components that talk to the Magewire component. We keep provider scripts limited to the payment step and declare them in the Content Security Policy so they pass PCI DSS 4.0 script controls.
